The Hickensian
7.02.08 Icon Design Explained (Quickly)
Last night was a great Oxford Geek Night, with a good mix of topics. I particularly enjoyed ‘Designing a web app with character’ by Denise Wilton, not because I got a mention, but because she brought up concepts that saved me some time in the wee 5 minutes that I had to explain Icon Design!
As promised, here are my slides for the presentation. They are a very quick run through of some guidelines for icon design, as well as a workflow using the Pathfinder icon as an example. You can also “download the PDF”: http://www.slideshare.net/hicksdesign/icon-design/download of the slides, but they’ll make more sense once the audio/video from the talks is available. Thanks for sharing your slideshow.
I wanted to attend the evening but couldn’t get through from Bristol in time.

Really interesting, thanks Jon. I didn’t know you did the pathfinder logo!

Great slides, thanks for giving us a peek at your work flow! One question, in the slides you say Illustrator or Fireworks. Out of curiosity, which do you personally prefer for icon work? I like Fireworks, but sometimes I find it can’t do the heavy lifting Illustrator can.

@ Matt Carey: Me neither :) Now I love it even more.
@ Jon: Great stuff as usual, man! I really enjoyed this one considering the fact that I currently work on an icon set for a recruitment app :)

Thanks Jon — always really handy to be privy to others’ work flows. Thanks for the download link too.

Glad to hear i could be of service :)
Really sorry i missed your talk, but thank you for putting the slides up.
Hopefully we’ll get to talk for longer next time and I’ll stop babbling like an idiot :)

Jon, very nice slide deck. Love that you share your process. It’s great to see another designer sketching and using Fireworks for icon work!
If Milwaukee weren’t a few thousand miles from Oxford, I would have been there to witness it in person. :-)
Cheers!

Great Slides! Icon design has always been a bit of a mystery to me, this clears up a lot. ;->
