Some Omniweb 5 tricks you might not know

  • This is my favourite! Pressing Enter will trigger any ‘next page’ links. When looking through search results in photo libraries, this feature is a god send.
  • Option_apple_b will open up the bookmarks manager in a new window, even if you have it set to appear in the browser.
  • Option clicking a toolbar bookmark folder highlights the name for editing.
  • Double clicking a tab will close it, and open that page in a new window
  • Double clicking the sites favicon will open the site in a new window, without closing the first instance.
  • Double clicking a bookmark toolbar folder will open all the bookmarks in tabs. Dragging the folder to the tab drawer does the same.
  • Drag a finder-level folder onto the window to reveal its contents. This has the added benefit of revealing the iPod’s hidden music folders too! (thanks Sean)
  • To export the page as one long PDF with no page breaks, type option-shift-command-s. Holding down option while exposing the File menu will also reveal this menu. (Thanks to Nick Matsakis)
  • If you select some text before outputting to pdf, it will be saved with the highlighted text.

It took me ages to find the “read more” link! I thought you were just teasing me with the promise of a new post…

Another trick:

Drag any Finder-level directory (or even file) to an OmniWeb window and see it’s contents instantly! It’s like navigating a web server, only it’s your local machine!

Now if only OmniGroup would drop the price a bit…

Sean/Jon,

I think the folder navigation works in just about any browser and has for a while. Don’t mean to shoot you down or anything…it’s just not exculsive to Omniweb.

Jon – sure! Add it.

cedmond – It doesn’t work with Safari, that I know. Haven’t tested with others.

Cedmond – this just seems to be in Mozilla based browsers. Safari, Shiira and IE are exempt.

Hey, sorry about that. I guess I’ve only ever tried it in Netscape or Mozilla. It’s not something I use a lot so I never tried when I was using IE or Safari.

If you want to save an entire page as a single large PDF, type option-shift-command-s. Holding down option while exposing the File menu will also reveal this menu.

This is different than printing to PDF in that the resulting PDF has the natural shape of the page, rather than being paginated to whatever paper size you’ve specified in the page setup dialog. Keep in mind that if the page specifies a style sheet for print media then it will be invoked.

(you can add this to the main entry if you want)

Omniweb is sexy but still not sure if it is actually worth paying for. IE 5.2 Mac supports directories being dragged to the fav bar. If I right click on a window in safari I get an Export as PDF menu item also. That may be a part of Stand not sure. That one actually prints the page as it looks vs the default print>print to pdf which only does the text. but Omniwebis pretty and fun.

-Yeah, its Stand thats giving you the option to export to PDF. I’m not suggesting that you spend $29.95 on a browser just to get PDF export, or folder draggability. These are just little extras. Omniweb is feature packed and well worth the money!

I am going to give Omniweb 5 a shot. Try it out for a week or so and then take it from there. I do enjoy your insight and comments and sure do appreciate it.

On my computer I have the bookmark manager set to open in a new window by default and option-apple-b opens it in the current window instead. It seems that whatever your default is for the bookmark manager, option-apple-b will do the opposite.

If you’ve got links in the favorites toolbar, pressing apple-1 will take you directly to the first link (and apple-2 to the second, and so on).
