8.09.07 Yes, yes, yes I know the Google Reader theme is broken

Yes I know they added a search bar, and the that the header is real mess right now. I use it too remember?! So you can all stop emailing me about it, and when I get a chance I will see if I can update it!

K? ;o)

Btw, I’m dying (DYING!) for a Mac OS X theme for the new Bloglines Beta (http://beta.bloglines.com/). Is there any chance you’ll do one?

Does any one know how I could go about uninstalling the theme for now?

Thanks for the update. Reading through my feeds just isn’t the same using the default style. :) As always keep up the great work. I’ll be patiently waiting for the new version.

Jon, have you considered putting the code for the Google Reader theme in a public repository (Google Code for example)? This might encourage others to share the workload of keeping it up-to-date.

If he releases it out in the wild how will he piss everyone off?

Jon, have you considered storing the code for the Google Reader Theme in a publicly accessible repository (Google Code, for example)? This might encourage others to help keep the theme up-to-date.

The google reader theme is design. Yes, it’s code that needs to be updated as the reader shifts footing, but it’s coded design. Design isn’t as easily maintained by a community as code is. It’s possible, but just dumping it in a repository and giving it word write access doesn’t make a good recipe for design.

If you’ve fixed the design and updated the code, and want to turn over all rights to it, I’m sure Jon and others (me) will accept a patch. I’d love my reader too look healthy again as soon as possible.

Hello Jon and users of the GReader Theme,

There’s no reason to put the code in a public server, or in a version control. The last one would be great. But, much os the theme users are internet people, people who work closely to web, or even programming and designing for web. So let’s do our home work, lets fix all bugs and spread the code among internet.

Jon doesn’t have a obligation to provide us with fixes or new themes, we have the ‘power’ to build one too. I don’t use the GReader theme, I use an old theme for Bloglines, and I have made some changes to best fit for me.

So, beside ask for new lines of code, do yourself… at least will be one more exercise/experience/knowledge to all of us.

regards,

RA

I have been wondering about using something like Google Code for this, but the problem is that there needs to be a clear ‘roadmap’ so that people know what they’re coding towards.

In fixing the theme this weekend, I’ve found I’ve needed to change direction a little on the header, to incorporate the search bar, so its all too ‘firefight-ery’ to have a clear roadmap of what needs to be done. However, contributions of code are always welcomed, and I have used them too!

Anyway, a fix is coming soon – another day or so.

Hey, Jon, we know we keep introducing changes that make maintenance a big PITA, but I just wanted to let you that those of us on the Reader team (and others within Google) very much appreciate your work and themes. Thanks.

Ha, no worries Chris – its good to have the search feature! It’s more that I get a lot of emails telling me what I already know!

Hi Jon,

I simply love your skin! However, few things didn’t appeal to me, being a Windows user so I decided to change it a bit. (screenshot).

Regards :)
