Hill House - a free font from Hicksdesign

27 Jan 2005

Hill House is a typeface based on the distinctive handwriting of Glasgow architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928). The Hill House is a building originally designed for the publisher Walter Blackie, and is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. Now that the copyright on his handwriting style is in the public domain, this typeface is seen everywhere in Glasgow, from jewellers to chip shops! For more information on Mackintosh visit the CRM Society.

I made this font over 10 years ago, but it’s still popular due to it’s suitability for wedding invitations! The font features special glyphs for the words ‘to’, ‘at’ and ‘of’, and contains Mac, PC and Opentype formats. See how Max Riffner has used the font…

Hill House isn’t foundry quality, but it is free free to use in every way, including embedding with Cufon or with @font-face. It’s also available on Typekit for easy embedding!
