Radiohead and me

25 Jun 2017

Radiohead is inextricably linked with milestones in my life. When my wife Leigh and I met, it was just as OK Computer was released and it became the soundtrack of our first year together. We were both obsessed with it. Then Kid A came out when Leigh was pregnant with our daughter, Amnesiac when she was born and Hail to the Thief when our son was born. It goes on. I should do a Troika about that someday.

But they’re not an easy band to go and see. The last time Leigh and I saw them live was in Victoria Park in London, almost 10 years ago today. Since then, the mad scramble for tickets has always resulted in disappointment. Even if we had managed to get Glastonbury 2017 tickets, it looked like the view wouldn’t have been great unless you were in the VIP area.

So I’m still buzzing about watching them live at Glastonbury via tellybox last night. Yes, it’s never as good as actually being there, but it’s the next best thing and it was pretty damn spectacular. The view and sound quality was superb, and it was an absolute blinder of a set – with a real spread of music from the albums. Even songs like Idioteque that I’ve always been so-so about came alive (something they did for ‘National Anthem’ when I saw them at Victoria Park).

Cover art for In Rainbows

10 Oct 2007

It’s out, and I’m listening right now. It’s even better than I hoped it would be, but it’s bare bones at the moment. No cover art – well that just won’t do for this coverflow user. According to NME the art is coming, and it sounds like it will be a Stanley Donwood artgasm.

Here’s my attempt, with a 600px version available here. Do you fancy a go too? When you’re done, please post a 300px square copy here in the comments, using Textile (wrap the image URL in exclamation marks.). I’m looking forward to seeing what people come up with!

Inktober Day 22. Well, @hicksmade left me with a toughie to follow. Here’s my attempt at Dali taking his pet anteater for a walk. #inktober #inktober2018 #leighandjondoinktober #dali

Inktober Day 21, another bird (sorry @hicksmade)! This is the Snipe that I watched from the hide at Rusty Common on Friday. Lovely birds with beaks that defy the body they’re attached to. #inktober #inktober2018 #leighandjondoinktober #snipe

Inktober Day 20: quick doodle without planning in pencil or looking at reference, which is usually a bad idea. Your turn @hicksmade! #inktober #inktober2018 #leighandjondoinktober

Inktober day 17 . @hicksmade’s pen led me onto squid and their ink shooting abilities. I also found out that a part of the squids anatomy is called a ‘pen’. #inktober #inktober2018 #ink #leighandjondoinktober
